MIXTAPES: 4th of July 2017 DAY & NITE

Back again with over 60 songs to keep you moving (or relaxing, whatever you prefer) on this hopefully long holiday weekend. Someone asked me recently “why ‘DAY’ and ‘NITE'”? Well, if you are on the beach this weekend, you really should only be keeping time through the system of daylight = day and night = night time. No need for watches on the beach. This year’s DAY mix spans 34 tracks that start in the folk/indie pop realm before moving into some upbeat electro pop that should transition to some danceable sunset ready cuts. Dan

There is a lot to be excited about with the change in seasons to warmer weather. I expect the sunshine, patio perching, and summer-ready new music. I did not expect brand new music from two of my all time favorites: LCD Soundsystem and Arcade Fire. Win Butler & co’s “Everything Now” is probably more ‘summery’ of the two with a disco flair, but “Call the Police” has an urgency that feels like classic LCD without being dated. Aside from those gems, JR JR returns with another melodic indie hit while including an important message about

The tricky thing with semi-monthly mixtapes is that if you fall behind one month, it is nearly impossible to catch up. So much new music, so little time. However, my excuse is valid: I spent the last 5-6 months working on an essay for my master’s degree and I am now finished. Done. Special thanks to my amazing wife for all of the patience, encouragement, and sanity throughout the process. Honorable mention goes to my puppy, Buffalo Trace, Bonobo, Real Estate, and Scott Melker’s Soul House mixtape series. What does this mean for you?

February’s mixtape still features the returns of many JayeL Audio favorites, including the xx, Cold War Kids, Spoon, and the Shins. However, this collection is led by a number of newcomers that give hope for new bands to follow in 2017. National Parks charmed on my first experience with their sounds on melodic (and excellently named) number “Backwards Centaur”. Overcoats put their own heavenly spin on Hozier’s “Cherry Wine”, and Mating Ritual provide Kings of Leon like energy on “How You Gonna Stop It?”. London duo Shy Luv made the greatest impression on single “Shock

2017 is here and I managed to wrap up my annual lists for 2016 (barely). Though I am done counting down 2016, there was a ton of great new music released in Nov/Dec that should not be missed. Kid Cudi made a quality return on his latest album, complete with two solid Andre 3000 features. Run The Jewels dropped another politically charged album for free that is perfect if you need fiery protest music for the days ahead. Aside from hip-hop album releases, Marian Hill collaborated with Lauren Jauregi on an addictive electro pop gem

    2016 Wrap-Up: Top Albums of 2016

2016, where do I begin? I should probably just accept that the debate regarding the worth and validity of the album as a medium will likely continue each year that I listen to music. If I do accept that, then 2016 was a strong effort on behalf of the “pro-albums” team. Many legendary musicians passed away at an alarming rate (at least it seemed that way), but many huge names returned with big new releases. Some were surprises (Beyonce, Frank Ocean “Blonde”), others were epic (A Tribe Called Quest, Bon Iver, Chance the Rapper), several

2016 brought on a lot of changes in remix-land that were not necessarily great, depending on your stake in the game. Soundcloud Go’s launch meant labels, acts, and producers could finally monetize the millions of listens on the service. However, that meant a massive amount of producers had their accounts disabled for copyright reasons, mash-ups went nearly extinct, and even hampered Hype Machine’s ability to have the freshest new music on the planet. My own remix listening experience was particularly hampered with 30 second previews (instead of full tracks) proliferating Hype Machine and the need
