Mixtapes: Narkhat & The Nark Runner

For all of the complaining I did about the lack of quality hip-hop last year, 4th quarter 2014 had a plethora of new gems to blast on repeat. The albums were especially great with the likes of Big KRIT, Run The Jewels, Ghostface Killah, J Cole and PRhyme all dropping new full length features. DJ Mustard’s production once again managed to be everywhere (“Don’t Tell’Em”, “Stand For”, “IDFWU”), but DJ Premier’s resurgence also continued on tracks with Slaughterhouse, Saigon and of course, the Royce Da 5’9″ featured PRhyme. The pre-release hype of the album proved

I knew I would enjoy Scott Melker‘s latest production as soon as I heard the iconic snare from “Poison”. Melker got together with producer Niko Javan to make Bell Biv Devoe’s ’90 classic even more dance-floor friendly. The added elements of rattling bass and stuttering synth, plus tempo adjustments make for a perfect place in your next peak hour DJ set. Stream Scott Melker & Niko Javan’s remix of “Poison” below, plus one of Melker’s recent more dance-oriented mixes. BONUS: Scott Melker Live at E11even

Chaz Bundick has been quite the chameleon over his career. He’s been content to experiment with dance music (Les Sins), art and even lend a hand to Chromeo’s latest album, White Women. Arguably, most of his success has come from the rock and dance-inspired sounds of his main project, Toro Y Moi. New single “Empty Nesters” from upcoming album What For? shows Bundick is still apt to experiment drawing from inspirations like Big Star and Talking Heads. David Byrne almost feels present on “Empty Nesters” with hazy production that glows and flutters with synth, distortion

Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders – To Keep And Be Kept ft Sharon Van Etten

Any time I see a song listed as “featuring Sharon Van Etten” it is usually a good enough reason for me to press ‘play’. That rule still applies after checking out “To Keep And Be Kept”, the latest from recent Fat Possum Records signees Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders. The nostalgic rock cut serves as an early offering of Jack Ladder’s 4th album, Playmates, due out 2/24. Ladder’s deep rusty vocals (reminiscent of Matt Berninger of The National and Nick Cave) meld nicely with SVE’s heavenly tones over a production that has the glow of ’80s

The January release of Coachella’s 2015 line-up set off a domino effect for music fest organizers to get their wares out sooner than expected. Coachella only set loose their 2015 poster two days earlier than 2014, but I don’t recall the wave of line-up releases coming this fast and furious last year. The lack of a major reunion (see: OutKast, The Replacements in 2014) or surprise big new albums (see Jack White, Phoenix) certainly made 2015’s crop feel less than exciting, but there are still plenty of diverse options for music fans. I haven’t decided

Dora, the Wolfdog. Sljeme, Croatia, January 2015 via Travelstache So many remixes, so little time. Am I right? A lot of big names returned to Remix Friday this week in a big way with strong productions. Bixel Boys gave Le Youth’s “R E A L” a banging percussion-driven remix, Pat Lok dialed up the deep house sounds for Gold Fields and Urban Contact reworked the groove of Olympique’s “Face Down The Earth”. Even new finds like That’s Nice & LeSonic crafted danceable rhythms for your weekend listening. Also, I have to say I’m loving The
