It doesn’t go down until October, but the other festival in the Texas state capitol, Austin City Limits, throws its line-up in the music fest ring.

What: Austin City Limits Festival 2009

When: October 2nd – 4th

Where: Zilker Park, Austin, TX

Headliners: Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Kings of Leon, Ben Harper and Relentless7, Beastie Boys

Artist Highlights: John Legend, The Dead Weather, Flogging Molly, Lily Allen, Bon Iver, Girl Talk, Arctic Monkeys, The Decemberists, Andrew Bird, Phoenix, Bon Iver, !!!, Heartless Bastards, Dan Auerbach, Blitzen Trapper, State Radio, Sam Roberts Band, Grizzly Bear, Passion Pit, Dan Auerbach, The Walkmen, School of Seven Bells, Deer Tick, Zac Brown Band, Todd Snider, Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3, The Dodos

Tickets: Weekend passes are $185, no camping as far as I know.

My Take: Quite a good line-up, although they pretty much had the pick of other fests leftovers.  Maybe they wanted to make sure fans had money saved for fall.  Its put on by C3 Presents, so the similarities to Lolla shouldn’t be too surprising. ACL doesn’t have the Killers, but C3 kept Beasties, Ben Harper and Kings of Leon, while subbing Pearl Jam and DMB in for Janes Addiction, Tool and Depeche Mode.  A move I definitely applaud.

Now you would think that would mean a drop-off on the mid-level/indie acts.  Think again.  ACL secured an R&B star (John Legend), Jack Whites next project (The Dead Weather), alt rock nostalgia (Sonic Youth, Toadies) and a Brit-pop queen (Lily Allen).  Lets not forget solid hip-hoppers (Mos Def, K’Naan, The Knux), acts with decent followings (Flogging Molly, Citizen Cope, Coheed and Cambria, STS9) and indie kid dreams (Arctic Monkeys, The Decemberists, Andrew Bird, Phoenix, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, Passion Pit, Dan Auerbach, The Walkmen, School of Seven Bells).  It doesn’t have a tent full of electronic acts, but ACL did manage Girl Talk.  He may not be at Lolla ’09, but he is gonna need a break after stopping at least 6 fests March – Oct.

What do you think?  Should ACL have waited to see feedback from other festival-goers before solidfying a line-up?

Kings of Leon – Use Somebody (RAC Mix)

Alena Diane – White As Diamonds

Blitzen Trapper – Gold For Bread

Deer Tick – Easy

School of Seven Bells – Half Asleep

Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks (live on Letterman)

The Walkmen – Louisiana

K’Naan – Somalia

  • Andrew

add The Killers to this one and it takes the cake for best lineup. Still might as is…

  • Totally agree. I change my mind daily between ACL, Bonnaroo and Lolla.
