Here it is, the official debut EP from Vonnegutt. Three tracks you’ve heard before (1 remix), but mastered in the studio and it shows. Not to mention the long-awaited release of one of my favorites “Here We Go Again”. You’ve most likely been listening to the free demos for over a year, so head over to Amazon or iTunes and pick up the official releases for a mere $4. Buy it now on Amazon. Buy it now on iTunes.
Also, check out this video recap of the band’s trip to SXSW.
“you can diplo and you know how to switch” You may have seen posts building to this, but I can now release the newest tracks from London, Ontario-based electro duo, The Girls Can Hear Us. Ed Huszar mans the boards, while Will Steeps handles the rhymes. I’ve mentioned TGCHU before, but I truly think they are going to make a lot of noise in 2010. And oh yeah, they just released an awesome new website at http://tgchu.com.
You might recall one of T-Pain’s many hits from 2008, “Can’t Believe It”. It was a mid-tempo R&B joint filled with promises to a lady including a trip to “Wiscansin”. I wasn’t a huge fan back then, but TGCHU managed to make me a convert with their latest remix. Ed gave the beat much needed life with extra synth and drumkicks that made it dancefloor ready. Will compliments the track further into anthem-zone with clever, party friendly lyrics like “You’ve got the dish/you can Diplo and you know how to switch”. 06 Can’t Believe It (The Girls Can Hear Us Remix) by thegirlscanhearus
The Girls Can Hear Us happen to be adept at remixing, but their original tracks might be better. “You Want It You Want It” is even more club-centric as Ed starts with slow building bounce that soon picks up momentum driven to Will’s inviting hook. I’d even venture to say this hit would be a great soundtrack to your upcoming Final Four party. Will’s drunken exploits are pretty hilarious too. You Want It, I Want It by THEGIRLSCANHEARUS
One more note about Lettercamp and I’ll give it a rest for a minute. I promise.
The Ferndale-based indie-pop group will be opening for You Say Party! We Say Die! (aka YSP! WSD!) on Tuesday, March 30th at The Pike Room. YSP! WSD! is a fun dance-punk outfit and is touring their 3rd album, XXXX. So if you’re in the Pontiac, MI area, you should probably mosey your way over the Crofoot complex for a good time with Liz and the gang.
Tickets are only $8 (purchase tix here), so again, what excuse do you have not to go? I thought so.
The ladies are certainly represented on the latest JayeL Audio mixtape. Atlanta’s next big thing, Janelle Monae appears not once, but twice in space-age R&B fashion. Elsewhere, newly re-grouped Lettercamp shows off its upbeat, synth-side on “Call It Off”, New Young Pony Club picks up where they left off with “Chaos”, and She & Him and Blair return with folk pop efforts worth repeated listenings. Aside from that, there is some dance-flavored fun on Chiddy Bang‘s catchy remix to Ellie Goulding‘s “Under the Sheets“, Kingdom‘s hypnotic “Mind Reader” and a Steve Aoki house-flavored remix of Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit Of Happiness”.
My favorite track this go-round comes from The Morning Benders. They seem to have continued the momentum since I saw them at Drunken Unicorn with The Submarines and Kyle Andrews last year. “Excuses” (check out the Yours Truly session here) is and engaging piece of surf rock that manages to sound sweeping with extra strings and awash with guitars.

I have never heard of Cobe Obeah until now, but I think I need to do more research. So far all I know is Cobe is 20, based in LA with African heritgae via Nigerian parents and his latest track is amazing. The reflective/motivational “Song Of The Starz” has everything I’m loving right now in hip-hop:
A) That rap/sung flow (see Kid Cudi, Drake, Kyle Lucas)
B) A banging staccato drum beat
C) Hunger
D) Unique production
Draymond Green aka The Dancing Bear says its March Madness time
Back in the swing of things this weekend, I promise. I might even have a new mixtape soon, if March Madness doesn’t take over my life…
A) You’ve probably heard this everywhere and saw it top the Hype Machine’s “Popular Chart”, but I had to make sure. LA-based remixer Clocker turns the “Office” theme and Dwight Schrute into another canvas for Lil’ Wayne. He also has a great remix of Snoop & Cudder’s “That Tree”. Clockwork – Office Musik featuring Dwight K. Schrute and Lil’ Wayne Thanks Carter (via Citizen Insane)
D) I’ve been drooling over the SXSW festivities all week, but there are a few things to enjoy for those not in Austin, TX. Many party promoters/bands/labels have been dropping free music to build buzz for the big event down south. Here are a couple:
-DJ Benzi Presents Elitaste x NUE Agency SXSW Mixtape (.zip file via Elitaste)
featuring Mike Posner, Asher Roth, Freddie Gibbs, PRGz, Outasight, Gigamesh and more. Mike Posner – Cooler Than Me (Skeet Skeet Remix)
-Amie Street’s 2010 SXSW Free Tracks (registration is free)
featuring Fool’s Gold, Flying Lotus, Surfer Blood, Princeton, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour and more. NPR Music is also streaming concerts all week from the likes of Broken Bells, The Walkmen and Spoon. The small portion I heard from Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings was a great way to end the night.
E) If you are in Atlanta, GA on June 9th, you will probably be wishing you were at the Tabernacle attending the Passion Pit concert. Pre-sale tickets were let loose today at noon here: http://tixx1.artistarena.com/passionpit/
Username is passionpit and Password is tickets
F) It took awhile, but JayeL Audio is back on Hype Machine here: http://hypem.com/#/list/10879
Be sure to follow me there for easy listening. Also, friend me there as well to see what I’m listening to at: http://hypem.com/#/jayelaudio
G) Lastly, I’m revising my e-mail newsletter list to send out exclusive music, news and mixtapes. If you would like to be added to the group, comment below or e-mail me at jayelaudioblog@gmail.com.
I’m head to South Florida for a few days, but here are a few links to keep you busy in the meantime:
A)Kate Nash is back with her 2nd album, My Best Friend Is You will be released on April 19th. The first single is “Doo Wah Do” and it sounds like, well Kate Nash. More catchy retro pop that she does so well. I couldn’t post an mp3, but I’m sure you’ll put your Google searching skills to use.
B) Back in December, I somehow missed Detroit rapper eLZhi’s effort, The Leftovers (Unmixtape). Its not a mixtape (technically), but a collection of eLZhi’s featured works. Featuring the likes of Jake One, Royce Da 5’9″ and Rapper Big Pooh, its more than solid and should make you dig in the crates for the underrated ’08 album, The Preface. Anyways, check out the Black Milk produced “Deep” of The Leftovers, its part of whats bringing back Detroit hip-hop. eLZhi – Deep (produced by Black Milk)
C) MGMT is preparing for the release of their latest effort, Congratulations. What better way than to leak the first single, “Flash Delirium”? This has some of the trippy elements of “The Youth”, but aside from that, it looks like we are getting some growth from the duo. “Flash Delirium” is a melancholy piece of retro wave that will probably turn off fans looking for the next “Electric Feel”, but is a damn good start to the MGMT’s next effort.
Download MGMT – Flash Delirium” free here.
E) Have you heard of From the Basement? Its a pretty amazing online music show featuring intimate performances from the likes of Beck, Andrew Bird, Fleet Foxes and The Shins. The Jose Gonzalez set (especially “Down The Line”) is particularly stirring. Thanks Tom.
If you have 200 minutes or so to spare, I highly suggest you check out the documentary, RIP: A Remix Manifesto. Its a 2008 doc by Brett Gaylor that takes a look at the copyright controversy in today’s media. Greg Gillis aka Girl Talk is one of the main focuses of the film and gives some intelligent insights into his views on the situation. One of the most interesting subjects is a single mom, who was sued for her son’s alleged use of Kazaa to download music.
Aside from the cool Girl Talk footage, its really an interesting documentary and definitely worth a viewing. I watched it last fall and its one of the more engaging docs I’ve seen in awhile.
