Thursday Linkage: Eminem, Girl Talk samples, T.I., The Roots, and more

A) I like the new album art for Eminem’s Recovery. Now where is the album?? UPDATE: Nah Right also has the tracklist. A Rihanna feature? Not what I was expecting. I’m looking forward to the production credits next.
B) The Feed The Animals Wikipedia page has already been a great resource for keeping track of all the sample’s from Girl Talk’s last album. How about something a little more interactive? This genius site allows you to listen to Feed The Animals and samples pop up as they hit your eardrums. (via Girl Talk’s facebook page)
C) T.I. just world premiered “I Got Your Back” featuring Keri Hilson. The DJ Toomp produced track is my early favorite for Song of the Summer. Get it via Nah Right.
D) Based on “How I Got Over”, the track list and newly released “Dear God 2.0″, I don’t see how the Roots can fail on their next release.
The Roots – Dear God 2.0 ft Monsters of Folk (via okayplayer.com)
E) The Hood Internet. Their track record for pulse-pounding mash-ups is getting out of control. Hear their mastery combining Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” with Crystal Castles’ “Baptism”.The Hood Internet – Rude Baptism (Rihanna x Crystal Castles) by hoodinternet
F) I feel like these guys might be two of the most consistent remixers right now:
Andre of RAC brings up the tempo a touch and gives the keys a rest on Tegan & Sara’s heartfelt track “Alligator”. Nice work, as usual.

You should probably hear RAC’s last T&S remix too:Tegan & Sara – Back In Your Head (RAC Mix) by Remix Artist Collective
Alan takes off the melancholy wrapping of Phantogram’s gem and turns it into bubbly, summer-friendly fun.
Phantogram – Mouthful of Diamonds (Alan Wilkis remix)
G) Hov + Jack White (and maybe Amy Winehouse)? Whatever this is, I’m going to like it.

Videodrome: Mike Posner and Vonnegutt

A couple of up and coming artists I’ve mentioned many a time get some much due video treatment. Check it.

Mike Posner – Cooler Than Me video
Bout time is all I can say. Glad to see it finally happen. Looks like Mike opted to showcase a electrofied version of the Gigamesh remix for the official video. Listen up for a snippet of “Smoke & Drive” in the background. UPDATE: Matt aka Gigamesh informed me that the remix I posted earlier is an incomplete version Mike made for the One Foot Out The Door mixtape. Matt later shortened the mix and add a bridge section, which is now in the video and is the “single mix”.

Video  below:

Vonnegutt – Promo video
You should already have The Appetizer EP (if not, get it here). With a Lollapalooza date coming and signing with new management, its about time a EPK was released. Basically, if you have a friend that doesn’t know Vonnegutt, pass it on. There is definitely a snippet of a new jam that I haven’t heard yet. Sounds pretty good to me.

Upcoming Vonnegutt tour dates:
5/29 -Spring 4th Center – Atlanta, GA
6/18 – Smith’s Olde Bar – Atlanta, GA

Wolf Parade: Post-Punk “Expo”

There is a slew of new music that I can’t seem to catch up on, but Wolf Parade might be most intriguing. The Montreal-based 4 piece is signed to Sub Pop, so thats already an omen of good things to come (see Blitzen Trapper, CSS, Fleet Foxes and more). Although band members are part of bands like Sunset Rubdown and Handsome Furs, they took time to craft their 3rd album as Wolf Parade, Expo 86 (drops June 22nd).

“Ghost Pressure” highlights singer Dan Boeckner’s wobbling yet engaging voice amid sparkling synth. “What Did My Lover Say?” has all the makings of a post-punk anthem…and I’m addicted to it.

Thursday Linkage: Janelle Monae, Junip, ACL and more

A) Janelle Monae stopped by David Letterman last night. I’m pretty sure you’ll be seeing her a lot more on television this year. Pick up Janelle Monae – The Archandroid here.
YouTube Preview Image
B) I mentioned Jose Gonzalez’s group project Junip a few weeks ago. In anticipation for the release of their upcoming EP, the band is giving away the EP free if you sign up for their e-newsletter here. Don’t mind if I do.
C) Pretty Much Amazing took part in a heater of a mixtape full of tracks to get you thru the start of summer-time. It features the likes of Sia, Friendly Fires, The Pass, Free Energy and more. Get it here.
D) Austin City Limits‘ line-up looks particularly sick, too bad 3 day passes are already sold out. Featuring headliners like The Eagles (!), M.I.A., The Strokes, LCD Soundsystem, Flaming Lips and The National, its easy to see why. 1 day passes are still around…for now.
E) Speaking of festivals, if you aren’t in favor of the mammoth size crowds of Bonnaroo or Lollapalooza, Flavorwire just posted a rundown of some pretty great music fests that are less claustrophobia-inducing here.
F) Fans of HBO series “How to Make It In America” are probably already addicted to Aloe Blacc’s “I Need A Dollar”. This mash-up should get the rest of the population on board. The Notorious B.I.G.’s street hustling narrative “Juicy” happens to sound pretty relevant over DJ Dizzy‘s superb mash-up.
DJ Dizzy – Juicy Dollars (Notorious B.I.G. vs Aloe Blacc) (re-up’d)
G) I’ll have a Hangoutfest recap coming soon! Until then, check out this video of the madness that was Greg Gillis aka Girl Talk.YouTube Preview Image

K-Os: The Anchorman Mixtape

I’ve already lamented and distressed on Canadian rapper/crooner K-Os in the past, but hopefully, he’ll get some buzz in 2010. A countdown for The Anchorman Mixtape just popped on his site. I’m hoping for original beats, but I bet K-OS could slay a few rappers’ tracks as well. Cop it on June 21st! UPDATE: In true hip-hop form, the mixtape has been pushed back to July 23rd. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Thursday Linkage: The Black Keys, Animated Albums, NPR Live Concerts, Nappy Roots and more

A) Seems like I’ve been waiting for May 18th to get here for far too long. Good thing NPR is streaming The Black KeysBrothers all week. Trust me, its worth a pre-order.
B) Want to see your favorite album covers come to life? Me too. Check out the great Animated Albums Tumblr page (via Creative Loafing).
C) Need to re-live a recent Local Natives, Hold Steady or Shout Out Louds concert? NPR has streaming live sets from all of these bands and more (via Pitchfork).
D) If you know 2dopeboyz.com, one of the top hip-hop blogs on the internetz, you probably have heard of creators Shake and Meka. Meka used have a hip-hop-tinged social commentary column/blog at HipHopDx back in the day. In addition to his 2dopeboyz duties, Meka is back at writing with the new XXL column, Slang Editorial. Read his hilarious and entertaining take aging rappers from my heyday and their place in current hip-hop, “Is Old Man Rap Really Obsolete?”. Read more “Slang Editorial” here.
E) I’m loving everything off the Nappy Roots’ next album, The Pursuit of Nappyness (pre-order here, due June 15th). Nah Right has the video for the previously mentioned “Ride” and “P.O.N.” is listed below. Check their website for the pre-album mixtape Nappy University.
F) Dave Wrangler wasted no time in putting Ratatat’s new jam “Party With Children” to work. The freshly leaked see-saw guitar sounds great mixed with one of my favorite Scarface tracks, “My Block”. Dave Wrangler – Party With Children on My Block (Scarface x RATATAT) by davewrangler

DJ Car Stereo (Wars): Explains It All

I don’t always get music sent to my inbox that I’m inclined to post, but I’ve been pretty lucky lately. I’m even more fortunate when a big name like DJ Car Stereo (Wars) passes on new music. Chris Rose aka DJ Car Stereo (Wars) burst onto the scene with his mash-up filled album The Bandit in 2007 to great acclaim (I eventually warmed up to it too). He made fans wait 3 years, but his follow-up Explains It All is here and ready for the masses.

The two tracks I’ve heard so far are sample-crazy, more ’90s than ’80s inspired and ready for your summer party. For starters “Whoah Dude”, samples the theme from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Skee-Lo, Vampire Weekend, Young Jeezy and many more. “Bouncehouse” takes bites of C&C Music Factory, David Banner, Lady Gaga, and even pits Eazy-E’s “2 Hard Mutha’s” against the glorious backdrop of Passion Pit’s “Sleepyhead”. Trust me, you need to hear it.

DJ Car Stereo (Wars) – Whoah Dude
DJ Car Stereo (Wars) – Bouncehouse

I haven’t got thru the whole album yet, but lucky for you and me, DJ Car Stereo (Wars) is giving it away free.
Pick up DJ Car Stereo (Wars) – Explains It All here (or order a physical copy for $5.02) and let me know what you think.

It wouldn’t be any fun if I was the only one reviewing new music all the time, so leave your musings below?

The Hood Internet: Drake vs Free Energy

DJ STV SLV of The Hood Internet takes two of the best new acts from 2009 and puts their strengths to work. Drake’s sing-song flow from “Say Something” glides over the ’70′s rock inspired Free Energy backing surprisingly well. Makes you wonder what Drake would have looked like if he would have been cast in “Dazed and Confused”. Right? Okay, maybe not.

Albums Anyone?

Albums don’t get enough credit on this site (or most places for that matter) in our ADD, mash-up, iTunes single of the week society. Here are a few worth mentioning:

Local Natives – Gorilla Manor
Duh.
Beat Bite: “Sticky Thread”
———————————————————————————————————————- Lettercamp – Racoon Panda
Shimmering pop that toes line between retro and rock. Its not “officially released” yet, so album art and more on this later.
Beat Bite: “Call It Off”
———————————————————————————————————————-
Hot Chip – One Life Stand
These electronic/pop artists were always hit (“Over and Over”, “Ready For The Floor”) and miss (“Wrestlers”) with me. Hot Chip’s latest record struck a chord with me though like Hercules and the Love Affair did. One Life Stand has dance beats with substance.
Beat Bite: “Hand Me Down Your Love”
———————————————————————————————————————-
B.o.B – The Adventures of Bobby Ray
I’ve been pretty patient considering I was clamoring for an official album since “Haters Everywhere” and that “Lonely People” freestyle. The beats are sound, guest appearances lived up to the hype, B.o.B.’s rhymes (for the most part) are worth a few rewinds. I think my only complaint is the need for more Bobby Ray guitar. That and the fact I wore out those singles too fast.
Beat Bite: “Lovelier Than You”
———————————————————————————————————————
Drive-By Truckers – The Big To Do
After 8 albums from Athens, GA-based Drive-By Truckers, you know what to expect: unapologetic southern rock mixed with narritives so descriptive they have to be true.
Beat Bite: “The Fourth Night of My Drinking”
———————————————————————————————————————
Albums in the pipeline: Janelle Monae – The Archandroid, The Hold Steady – Heaven Is Whenever, The Girls Can Hear Us – Every Day, The National – High Violet, Josh Ritter – So Runs The World Away

Any suggestions on new albums?
Musings on this list?
