I’ve stumbled upon a slew of new tracks over the past month, so I haven’t been able to give due attention to a number of albums and mixtapes. My new job allows for a lot more time with my iPod on the train and walk to work though, so I’ve relatively caught up this week.
Ypsilanti/Detroit chamber pop band The Juliets’ self-titled album is one of those that immediately stood out from the pack. With Ra Ra Riot showing the Discovery influence on their latest (The Orchard is great, btw) and The Decemberists embracing their rock side, the market for baroque/chamber pop is basically wide open. The Juliets exemplify this sound and strong songwriting on tracks like “Sweetheart” and “Like A Parade”. There isn’t a song that I don’t like, but “Evolved Into” is the current stand out. The way the band utilizes strings evoke the emotions of the track and emits further thru lead singer Jeremy Freer’s pained vocals.
