Girl Talk: Hangout Music Festival Interview

One of my new found friends who writes for Paste, Consequence of Sound and other music outlets was able to interview Girl Talk at Hangout Music Festival. Pretty cool interview and just shows how down to Earth Gregg Gillis is. Nice work Scotty.

Also, if you’re need of some quality PR, check out Greenberg Palmer – Boutique Public Relations.

Look for my rundown of the second annual Hangout Music Festival soon…

MP3: Cobe Obeah – Dark Night

Cobe Obeah is back with some heat over a Florence & the Machine sampling joint. I like the way he chopped that up there. Get ready for Song of the Starz 2: Dark Night mixtape.

Fool’s Gold: Street Clothes

Well that was fast. I had heard Fool’s Gold was back working on a new release and now comes a new single and release date. “Street Clothes” is a horn-filled indie punk cut that still features Luke Top’s warbling vocals but with less African influence than “Surprise Hotel.” Stream or exchange your e-mail for “Street Clothes” below. Pick up Leave No Trace on August 16th here.

J.Cole & Kendrick Lamar joints: Return of Simba and Hiii Power

I’ve already mentioned my admiration for J. Cole many times. With his emcee skills, production prowess and Jay-Z co-sign, I don’t see how he can fail. Cole recently dropped off another banger titled “Return of Simba” via his blog. The title is in reference to “Grown Simba” off the solid The Warm Up mixtape and continues to show Cole’s ever evolving skills.

And if you don’t already know Kendrick Lamar, you damn sure will soon. Especially since he has been in the lab with the good Dr. Dre. However, we all know how that can turn out (word to Rakim, Hittman, Stat Quo….). Below is the first single from his studio release, Section 80 with production from J. Cole. Between the wobbly, but soulful beat and Lamar’s emphatic rhymes about fighting higher powers in any form, whats not to love?:

Out of the Office: Hangout Music Fest 2K11

Tickets and shuttle pass are printed, bags are packed, Jen has arrived, and the route has been mapped out. I think that means its almost May 20th. If I had an away reply for this website, it would probably read: I’ll be out of the office from Friday, May 20th until Monday, May 23rd enjoying the hell out of the 2nd annual Hangout Music Festival. Yes, I will be on the beach in Gulf Shores, AL listening to the likes of Cee-Lo, The Black Keys, My Morning Jacket, Girl Talk and Foo Fighters with my feet in the sand and a cold Coors Light in my hand (with a koozie, of course).

If you aren’t able to attend, but still would like to be part of the festivities, you can download the mixtapes and watch the streaming video provided by iClips.

Talk to you Tuesday,
JayeL

Airlines – Colors video & Visions EP

How often did Airlines‘ quirky island electro joint “Burial Grounds” have you singing about, well, “standing on burial grounds” in the past month? Probably more often than you’d like to admit. BBurial GGrounds by airlines The L.A.-based quintet just released a patriotic inspired video with Schoolhouse Rock-style animation for “Colors” from their Visions EP.

Speaking of the EP, stream it below and head over to Airlines’ bandcamp to purchase for a measly $3. Cop it.

New Mixtape: The Narkover

These titles really haven’t made sense for awhile now, so why start now, right?

New hip-hop for your dome. I’ve already been drooling about Bad Meets Evil’s Hell: The Sequel EP, so I don’t need to discuss much here but “Fast Lane” is exactly what I hoped for. 50 Cent gets a beat that sounds straight outta Timbaland’s Black Album sessions (in a good way). Two new overseas rappers David Dallas and Tinie Tempah impress on their first Nark appearances. That David Dallas track sounds like a RJD2 or Ratatat beat I can’t place (“Loud Pipes” – thanks Nicole!). N.O.R.E. and Pharrell get back to making hits like they did in the old days. Sorry for the Ricky Ross haters (myself included) the beats and Wale appearances were too good to ignore. Speaking of “If I Die Today”, can someone explain to me the phenomenon of shooting guns in the air on NYE? Considering that half of the rappers that mention it are from NYC, aren’t there big ass buildings that get in the way?
