So…….what if I like the new Skrillex EP? Aside from the sometimes obnoxious, drop-heavy nature of past releases, you kinda have to admit that “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” and “Bangarang” had melodic elements to them. I’m not saying sold out fests/arenas filled with people made me anti (Rolling Stone had a great feature on Sonny, btw), but new release Leaving EP showcases some more of that crossover potential I enjoyed.
The title track balances dark rhythms and percussion with a distorted sample Star Slinger might borrow. “The Reason” pulses with Tron Legacy-style synth and bubbles into a dance-floor burner. “Scary Bolly Dub” isn’t mostly a rehash of “Scary..”, but a fun, bass-heavy reworking nonetheless. I’m not saying I’m the next Skrillex superfan, but these tracks have definite earworm capability and show off intriguing production qualities. In other words, I like it.
