I had a great conversation a few weeks ago with talent buyer/promotions director for Masquerade, Tim Sweetwood. Aside from the great insights he gave me into talent buying in Atlanta (more on that later), the one band he mentioned as one to watch was The Orwells. He wasn’t kidding. These young Chicago chaps haven’t hit 20 yet, but have been touring with Black Lips and causing a ruckus with rough cut punk sounds that are sure to charm fans looking for a break from anything synth related. “Mallrats (La La La)” excels with blistering guitar and a hook so simple, you’ll find it in your head 5 days later. “In My Bed” eases back on the garage rock sound, in favor of a more polished lounge punk sound that still layers in crashing cymbals. Lookout for this intriguing five-piece in 2013.
