Fall typically means one of two things for many music fans: a) more alt rock and less dance music to match flannel attire or b) a wave of big name releases for 4th Quarter business. Fall 2013 has a little bit of both options. 2013 has been atypical in that the entire year has been filled with huge offerings from gigantic acts and Fall meant more with Arcade Fire, a surprise from Broken Bells and M.I.A.’s long awaited return. This set definitely leans on alt/folk rock with new tunes from Poor Remy, Best Coast and Detroit’s own Jessica Hernandez. While I didn’t love the new Neko Case record, Bethany Consentino of Best Coast does an excellent impression of her on “I Don’t Know How”. The track lulls you into thinking it is a slower tempo BC standard before abruptly switching gears into a Case-like fiery barn burner. Elsewhere, Disclosure and Chromeo make sure you still have music to move to on the dancefloor, and I had to include Armeria’s remix to Joel Compass’ “Run” so you could be addicted as I am. My favorite song of the month might have narrowed the Top Track of 2013 race down to two. Mapei’s smart pop balladry on “Don’t Wait” was an instant repeat and I can’t decide if it has overtaken James Blake’s “Retrograde” for the #1 in 2013 slot. Let me know your top tracks of the month in the comments folks.

Mapei is my favorite so far. Not sure of this James Blake guy. I like the vocals on Poor Remy. The Dance yourself clean cover is pretty sweet. I believe John Mark Nelson’s the Moon and the Stars accompanied me on a recent trip up north, and it was perfect. And those are my current thoughts.

I echo LJ’s thoughts. That Mapei is catchier than a spider-web the size of the earth. (coincidentally, it’s jamming on the radio here right now!) And it makes my heart happy to hear a woman sing a James Murphy song.
