I can’t lie, I was mostly disappointed with Childish Gambino‘s second official album, Because The Internet. There were a lot of great ideas and I love artists that experiment, but aside from “3005”, “Telegraph Ave” and a few other tracks, I was pining for more Camp-like tracks. Donald recently announced a Gangsta Grillz release called STN MTN/KAUAI (as in Stone Mtn, GA and Kauai, Hawii) and dropped off a few tracks in advance of the mixtape. I wouldn’t say the new tracks are 100% Camp, but I’m a fan and am impressed with Gambino’s evolution.
The latest effort, “Sober” comes from the “kauai side” of the mixtape. The song has “rough” in the name, but it mostly seems like a charming finished product. Glover hits high notes over cascading synth before transitioning to a bassy, distortion filled segment that seems primed for a furious 16 bars. Other recent single “Candler Road” references Decatur, GA (near Stone Mountain) and moves from a venomous trap beat to a shimmering production with clever rhymes you expect from CG. Stream “Sober” and “Candler Road” below and look for STN MTN/KAUAI coming soon.
