IMG_2844I’ve received four notices to put out a mixtape and they were all absolutely correct that I was overdue. Hopefully 35 tracks of new indie, dance, pop, folk and remixes will suffice for October.

This month’s mix decidedly leans toward the folk and indie rock end of the musical spectrum, which tends to occur seasonally. The Lone Bellow make a triumphant return with “Then Came The Morning” that has elements of gospel, but plenty of stomp that will assuredly sound even better live. If you like their sound, you’ll certainly enjoy Neulore, Shakey Graves and Ed Prosek’s brand of folk with a bit of alt country mixed in. Shakey Graves’ “Dearly Departed” charms with harmonies thanks to a feature from Esme Patterson and lively percussion. Forgotten favorites The Staves reminded me on “Blood I Bled” why they were an opener worth talking about after a Bon Iver show a few years ago.

Dance tracks weren’t as plentiful, but I couldn’t stop playing WKND’s remix of a cover by Chet Faker (“Lover Lover”) and Alex Adair’s uplifting remix of Jessie Ware’s “Say You Love Me”. I likely played Discotech’s take on Kiesza’s “Hideaway” most often and Karen Harding’s “Say Something” is probably my favorite find from The Magician’s Magic Tapes in 2014. Frazey Ford will fill your sultry, songbird void with inescapable horns and organ on “September Fields”, while Spanish Gold offer up a retro, blues rock sound that I’ll never get tired of. Walk the Moon bring back more jubilant indie pop on “Shut Up & Dance” and the Childish Gambino track pretty much speaks for itself.

Though it didn’t land at the usual track four or five slot, San Francisco’s Cathedral’s claimed my ears consistently as my favorite over the past month. “OOO AAA” intoxicates with hazy synth, slinky guitar and excellent female/male interplay that any fan of the xx or Phantogram will appreciate. Get ready to play that one over and over.

Finally, special thanks to Andrew & Chelsea who not only suggested George Ezra’s “Budapest” to me last month, but sent over an amazingly generous donation. All that plus a much appreciated thank you at their wedding was way too much.
