April was a solid preview of the almost obnoxious amount of shows ahead this summer, but May is the true kickoff concert season. If you’ve seen Tame Impala, Matt and Kim or Trombone Shorty live, you know they cannot be missed when they come through your city. Besides, they all hit Royal Oak Music Theatre this month, along with Trampled By Turtles, Madeon, Xavier Rudd and others.
Elsewhere, The Replacements bring their farewell to the Fillmore, Canadian act Great Lakes Swimmers bring locals Woven Tangles along for an folk/alt rock evening at Majestic Cafe and indie poppers Tennis stop by the Loving Touch. Two of the most polarizing names in music, Drake and Lana Del Rey separately hit The Palace and DTE Music Theater, which will surely elicit a few opinions. Lastly, comedy fans can find big names like Kevin Hart, Chris Hardwick plus a sure to be eccentric night with Nick Offerman and Megan Mullaly come through Metro Detroit.
Aside from excellent solo shows, May officially launches music festivals in Michigan (and elsewhere). The Metro Times Blowout is happening now with indie rock standards Black Lips and Andrew WK plus great Detroit talent like Gosh Pith, Mexican Knives, The Ill Itches and more. Movement will once again keep Hart Plaza and downtown thumping with just about every kind of dance music you could imagine Memorial Day weekend. This has to be the only fest where you can see Disclosure, Boys Noize, Skrillex and Snoop Dogg all play DJ sets in one weekend, right?
Speaking of electronic music, the Magic Stick has been reborn as Populux with flashy lighted pillars and an event list that has many of Detroit’s and the world’s top up and coming DJ’s/producers. National acts like Hayden James, Dan Deacon and Toro y Moi, such Remix Friday favorites as Viceroy, Autograf, JackLNDN, plus Detroit producers Carl Craig, BeatLoaf and Lomen all will touch the new stage. Be sure to check out this new venue while it is on the rise.
I’ll see you at Interpol and Viceroy (+ Lomen) for sure, but I hope to catch at least one more show. What shows will you attend this month?
