Montreal-based producer Kaytranada was already having one helluva 2016 after the highly anticipated release of 99.9%, the Canadian producer’s first official album. The album already received acclaim for its expert melding of funk, soul, and dance music with strong features from Vic Mensa, AlunaGeorge, and more. Further praise came via the 2016 Polaris Music prize for best Canadian album of the year, which I’m sure will translate to more end of the year accolades.
Aside from the recognition for 99.9% (likely one of my favorite albums of the year as well), Kaytranada’s production game has been astute as ever. From recent production on Portland singer Reva DeVito‘s soul-filled new EP The Move to an edit of Solange’s new track “Cranes In The Sky” and upcoming work with Snoop Dogg, Kaytranada’s profile continues to grow. Kaytranada even infused his beat from Chance the Rapper’s recent effort with more party-ready energy and offered an extended mix of “All Night”. Each of these efforts exhibits growth from Kay’s early Soundcloud edits that garnered him a fervent following that is sure to continue.
