This year’s top tracks list had a problem…too many good choices. Hence the 100 song list you see before you. As usual, the rules are that songs counted came out in 2017 (or late 2016, see: Michigan Rattlers, RTJ, and Kid Cudi) and are my most played and adored of the year. 100 songs also means that as much as I would like to write about each song, I’ll spare you the time and mention a few notes on my top 5.

  1. 1. Kendrick Lamar – HUMBLE.: I was already obsessed with this song’s addictive Mike Will Made It production (those sinister piano keys!) and Kendrick’s acrobatic flow upon the track’s release in early 2017. However, my adoration peaked in June when seeing a family in full Ford Explorer sitting in traffic all head-nodding in unison to the booming bass filtering out the SUV’s windows during a warm July day.
  2. 2. Portugal. The Man – Feel It Still: PTM have always made earworm hooks with hazy, near otherworldly productions, but “Feel It Still” was the perfect combination. Danceable, nostalgic, and the less than 3 minute run-time makes for a repeat-ready hit.
  3. 3. N.E.R.D. feat. Rihanna – Lemon: The thumping production of “Lemon” reminds me of The Neptunes produced tracks of the early 2000’s, but none of those beats were this playful. Rihanna steals the show with underrated jabs and a flow your favorite rapper will probably steal in the future. Also, let it be known Rihanna’s constellation is “space”.
  4. 4. LCD Soundsystem – call the police: At 6 minutes and 59 seconds, “call the police” is the longest on the list, but I could have used at least another 2 minutes of the poignant call to arms that alludes to the classist political warfare to date. The lead single from american dream was urgent and necessary in 2017.
  5. 5. Fleet Foxes – If You Need To Keep Time On Me: Crack-Up was not a Fleet Foxes record for everyone, but “If You Need To Keep Time On Me” was one of the few songs on the album reminiscent of the band’s past. The sparse poetry from Robin Peckhold and bare-bones-backing felt simple and subtle at first, but grew ever important and applicable to many situations with each listen.
