New Mixtape: Nark of Ages

I’m always amazed at the response I get from these hip-hop/rap mixtapes. I’ve been making them since high school and to this day, I get more people asking “when is the next Nark dropping” than I would ever imagine. As is always the case, the amount of garbage rap I comb through to get these is astounding. There simply isn’t as much good hip-hop material to make these mixtapes come out monthly, but I’d like to think that when I finally send these out, its quality from front to back.

The latest Nark features the return of veterans Nas, Obie Trice, Del the Funky Homosapien and Cam’ron all at the top of their game. Well, Cam’ron just proves he is still a nutcase, but everyone else is still reaches heights of past glory. Mainstays like Big KRIT, T.I. and Killer Mike continue to put out quality material, but Kanye really went for the jugular with “Theraflu” and “Mercy”. We already knew Kendrick Lamar had a wealth of potential, but new laid back single “The Recipie” really showcases talent and beat selection as he goes toe to toe with the good Dr. I could also speak on the brewing talents of Children of the Night and Logic, but you’ll soon hear why I’m a fan.

UPDATE: Apparently, the Del track is from his Deltron 3030 project back in 2000. It was new to me and I probably stumbled upon it when looking into his new project w/Attractive Sin. Enjoy a bit of history.

New Mixtape: JayeL Audio 4-4-12

Spring returned in ATL, but someone might have got the seasons confused because its more like Summer here. Santigold, Tanlines, Edward Sharpe and Free Energy are here to let you know: they aren’t confused and essentially picked up where they left off since we last heard them. Elsewhere, Cudder and Dot Da Genius get into space age love as WZRD on “Teleport 2 Me” and Reptar shows why they are one of my band’s to watch on the spring-ready anthem “Sebastian”. Also, someone really needs to explain to me why “Wolf” was only a bonus cut off First Aid Kit’s recent album. If their album leftovers sound like that, they need to put out album #3 already. Lastly, I’m not sure what a Django Django is, but if these guys put out thumping music like “Default”, I’ll support it.

Special Thanks to CoS, PMA, All Things Go and Phil for the heads up on the Civil Wars cover.

In case I’ve neglected to mention it before, the .xml file included in the folder you are about to download will organize all these songs in the order I intended. Simply add the “JayeL Audio 4-4-12″ folder of songs to your iTunes, then click “File”>”Library”>”Import Playlist” and select the .xml file. You’ll be able to hear the songs in the order I intended. Yes, there is a method to my madness.

New Mixtape: JayeL Audio 4-3-12

A combination of moving, late nights at work and a fried motherboard means we have a lot of music to talk about. Luckily, I was able to scoop up a new MacBook Pro and get relatively caught up on the plethora of new music unleashed in the last month or so. I’m somewhat glad I waited as long as I did though, otherwise the new mixtape wouldn’t have included new joints from the likes of Edward Sharpe, Dragonette and Jai Paul. Get after it. I’m pretty sure I’m more addicted to Tennis’ bluesy “Petition” than I was when I reviewed it.

New Mixtape: The Nark With The Dragon Tattoo

The latest Nark mixtape reminded me of a few people who regularly input on the music I send out, so lets profile.
Laura – You’ll be happy to know clever up and coming emcees Schoolboy Q and A$AP Rocky figured out the perfect way to put a “Pursuit of Happiness” sample in a song.
EK/Jessica – As ATL legends, you might recognize Saigon’s choice in 3 Stacks sample.
Brian P – “Rack City” means something a little different than your gift from the wedding registry.
P-Money – Dr. Dre promptly ignored your request for Detox to drop, but he did grant your wish of a T.I. collabo.
Gutter – How is it possible that Project Pat thought of another weed nickame? Cheese and crackers? Really?
Thomas – I would says something clever here about your love for Chiddy Bang, but no doubt you’ve been jamming to “Ray Charles” on the Hype Machine for months.
Millhouse – You and Jamie can celebrate the birth of your first daughter with a perfectly timed ode to Beyonce and Jay-Z’s billion dollar baby. Thank god you had the sense to not name her after a color.
Swenson – You’ll have to let me know if you approve of XV’s Skrillex sampling on “Boss Level”. I’ve always thought a rapper would sound great on “Scary Sprites and Nice Monsters”.
Drew – You should really thank Ricky Rozay on your travels to South Florida. Well, maybe you should thank Drake because “Stay Schemin” sounds more like a Drizzy song than an Officer Ross track.

New Mixtape: JayeL Audio 1-27-12

Influence is largely the theme of the majority of mixtape number two for this week. Teen Daze kicks things off with an Earth, Wind & Fire sampling dance party. Speaking of influence, does the piano fueled opening of Miike Snow’s “Devil’s Work” remind anyone else of Van Halen’s “Right Now”? I swear I just flashbacked to middle school. Charming female songstresses Alex Winston and Oh Land cover The Black Keys and The National, respectively. Even Mayer Hawthorne and Electric Guest offer up soul and Motown related gems. Elsewhere, The National demo a new track that sounds, well, like The National. We welcome back The Shins, which sound like the old Shins, but aren’t really the old Shins. Lastly, I have to say, I’m really enjoying the blues rock inspired sound of Cold War Kids new demos. I’m certainly intrigued by the addition of a new lead guitarist in Modest Mouse’s Dann Gallucci.

NEW MIXTAPE: Narkanomics

You know it must be 4th Quarter when all the big guns of hip-hop are offering up new material. Drake snapped up Ricky Ross over an eloquent Just Blaze production on “Lord Knows”. Ludacris and B.o.B. let loose a free mixtapes with Luda referencing my favorite movie of 1985, Back To The Future and Meek Mill set himself up for success with a DJ Khaled posse cut for “I’m A Boss”. Even newly reunited Mobb Deep (without the Curtis co-sign) talked fellow Queensbridge native Nas into a guest appearance on “Get It Forever”. The most talked about track from Young Jeezy’s Thug Motivation 103 doesn’t disappoint with features from Hova and the ever elusive Andre 3 Stacks.

Its not all about the big names though. New emcee (with an awful awful name) Buddy scores a slick debut on Neptunes’ produced “Awesome Awesome”, K-OS co-hort Saukrates lines up his most viable song to date in “Say I” and Shawn Christopher shows other indie blog combing rappers what to do with Cults’ hit “Go Outside”. Lastly, thanks to Hype Machine, my days of filling the Cudder void have been temporarily quelled after hearing new goodness from blog favorite Skizzy Mars (“Tara”, “Together”). Isn’t there someone in Cudi’s camp who can tell him to drop the guitar?

If all of that sounds up your alley, download Narkanomics below and leave a comment.

NEW MIXTAPE: JayeL Audio 11-23-11

photo via Reckless Times
Turns out leaving for almost two weeks means a lot of new music to catch up on. Well worth the wait, of course. Hopefully, you’ve already had time to digest excellent new releases from Florence & the Machine, Childish Gambino and Mayer Hawthorne. If not, I’m betting you will soon. Elsewhere, Phantogram returned with addictive synth pop on “Don’t Move” and the District Attorneys released an EP of demos that really could be a full on southern rock album (see “California Fire”). Newcomers this round include The Rubens who shine with blues rock (“Lay It Down”), retro pop action via Starlight Girls (“The Hunch”) and The Preservation (“The First Story”). Last but not least, you can’t tell me Bastille doesn’t transport you right back to high school with their cover of City High’s “What Would You Do”.
