The act’s space age ambient pop with a hip-hop edge must have charmed Pharrell as well, since he executive produced their latest EP, Lightwaves. All five tracks balance pop sensibility with a sense of calm, but “Take A Look” shines as synthy piece that would line up nicely next to M83 on your next playlist.

Like I mentioned previously, you can’t really compare Hangout and Bonnaroo for many reasons (history, farm vs. beach, 4 day vs. 3 day, tent vs. condo, etc)….but if you were Bonnaroo did a damn good job of showing why they are the king of festivals on this side of the country. I’ve been addicted to Melbourne’s Art Van Delay‘s Flux Pavillion/Luda mash-up for a few months, so I was certainly glad to see a new album on the way. Galore continues on that moment with an insanely deep sample list featuring everyone from Trina to the Rapture to Florence to the Beastie Boys. The juxtaposition of a remix of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” with Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” and Birdman/Weezy’s “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy” works particularly well.

So that was interesting, eh? That makes my grand total of correct guesses….2. I wondered last week what angle organizers would take: jam band-centric? more electronic artists? a spice of indie? At first glance, I would say they went with…I have no idea. A little bit of everything? I didn’t expect a lot on the hip-hop front, but Hangout’s selection of only white rappers every year is a bit disheartening. Plenty of artists that I need a 101 on (SCI I’ve been hearing about for years, but haven’t checked out yet), a few I could do without and a lot that are fine, but I’m not in love with. I would assume that the next headliner to be announced is either ~~Eddie Vedder~~ or Red Hot Chili Peppers, but after the initial announcement, who really knows. This initial wave of acts certainly didn’t wow me. The acts in the “yay” section are great (Alabama Shakes, Gary Clark Jr, Dawes and Wilco in particular). I’m hoping a lot of contracts just aren’t finalized yet, because there seem to be a lot of gaps so far. Obviously, Bonnaroo doesn’t have the beach, proximity to a pool or the 35K attendance cap, but the line-up rumors already seem like more of a win.

Laura – You’ll be happy to know clever up and coming emcees Schoolboy Q and A$AP Rocky figured out the perfect way to put a “Pursuit of Happiness” sample in a song.
EK/Jessica – As ATL legends, you might recognize Saigon’s choice in 3 Stacks sample.
Brian P – “Rack City” means something a little different than your gift from the wedding registry.
P-Money – Dr. Dre promptly ignored your request for Detox to drop, but he did grant your wish of a T.I. collabo.
Gutter – How is it possible that Project Pat thought of another weed nickame? Cheese and crackers? Really?
Thomas – I would says something clever here about your love for Chiddy Bang, but no doubt you’ve been jamming to “Ray Charles” on the Hype Machine for months.
Millhouse – You and Jamie can celebrate the birth of your first daughter with a perfectly timed ode to Beyonce and Jay-Z’s billion dollar baby. Thank god you had the sense to not name her after a color.
Swenson – You’ll have to let me know if you approve of XV’s Skrillex sampling on “Boss Level”. I’ve always thought a rapper would sound great on “Scary Sprites and Nice Monsters”.
Drew – You should really thank Ricky Rozay on your travels to South Florida. Well, maybe you should thank Drake because “Stay Schemin” sounds more like a Drizzy song than an Officer Ross track.
