CELEBRATION: The Magician – Magic Tape 59 (An Appreciation)

Well folks, it is official: I have completed all of my graduate school class work. I still have a pesky thesis to tackle in the near future, but not going to classes is a big victory in my book. I have a thousand people to thank, but my wife gets the biggest credit for making our family survive the last 3 crazy years. Patience is a virtue and she had an endless amount of it to keep our lives going. On the musical side, Bonobo, Pretty Lights, Explosions in the Sky, ODESZA and a few

Whilk and Misky – Rain Dance & I Want Your Lovin’

London duo Whilk and Misky (aka Charlie and Nima) were constant plays last year with addictive rhythms like “Burn With Me” and “Babe I’m Yours” off their The First Sip EP. W&M manage to balance a concoction of folk, electronic and tribal influences that is more than appetizing. After a short, self-described “winter” coming to an end, W&M have dropped two new tracks that fit perfectly into their growing catalog. Recent release “Rain Dance” hums and builds with a haunting sample, light percussion and subtle guitar work before erupting with engaging vocals. First single &#

Back in action with a very, very delayed mixtape that rounds out a few late finds from 2015 and new joints from the past three months. Indie pop/folk tunes from The Lumineers, Moon Taxi and Modern Space kick off the set right before an upbeat section of electronic-inspired selections from the likes of Gryffin, AlunaGeorge and Matoma. The rest of the mix dabbles in indie rock (White Denim, Caveman), retro sounds (Lake Street Dive, Eli Paperboy Reed) and reflective cuts (Day Wave, Lola Marsh, Radical Face). Brooklyn synthpoppers Chairlift claim my favorite track of the

REMIX: Janet Jackson – Alright (Kaytraflip)

At this point, I think producer Kaytranada and legend Janet Jackson need to craft an entire album together. My obsession with Kaytranda’s take on Ms. Jackson’s “If” is well known, but the Montreal-based beatsmith has also laced other Janet works like Busta’s “What’s It Gonna Be”. Now Kaytranada just released his “flip” of Rhythm Nation 1814 classic “Alright” into a bossa nova burner featuring a sample of Burnier E Cartier’s “Mirandolina”. Stream Kaytranada’s spirited take on Janet Jackson’s “Alright” below. BONUS: Mary J Blige – I Can Love You (Kaytraflip) kaytranada Tour Dates

REMIX: AlunaGeorge – I’m In Control (The Magician Remix)

I’m sure The Magician hardly has a moment free to unleash remixes when he is dropping some of the best mixtapes (ahem, Magic Tapes) in the game. However, his latest is an addictive masterwork of house rhythms that makes it tough to choose: ‘remix or original’? Don’t get me wrong, Aluna Francis is still perfectly “In Control”, but The Magician’s new spin on the London duo’s latest single an authoritative force in its own right. Original Also, if you have not already listened to the Magician’s Magic Tape 59, I highly recommend it. Probably my

Grad school and a wiped hard drive have made it tough to churn out my usual output of mixtapes early this year. However, I am still keeping up with new music as much as possible (and there is plenty to keep up with) over at Spotify. Head over to Spotify and follow my playlist 2016 JAYELAUDIO FM to hear everything I’ve loved so far this year. New music from Mayer Hawthorne, White Denim, Vaults, Anderson Paak and more. Gryffin – Heading Home ft Josef Salvat

When Remix Friday favorite producers elevate their game from reworks to originals, I always root for their continued success. NYC-based Gryffin (aka Dan Griffin) is the latest remix producer to strike out on his own after dropping party-ready remix after remix for the likes of Tove Lo, Banks and one of my personal favorites, Years & Years. Australian singer Josef Salvat was another artist recently reimagined by Gryffin and collaborated with him on “Heading Home”. According to Gryffin, the song originally started as a demo that featured the first verse, which Dan molded with new
