    MIXTAPES: 4th of July 2016 – DAY & NITE

My favorite mixes of the year are back! The 4th of July mixtapes allow me to unleash indie, folk, dance, electronic and remix tunes that just missed earlier track lists and add songs I wouldn’t normally add on JayeL Audio mixes. There isn’t much time for a preamble this year, but DAY features a host of album cuts that seemed perfect for the beach (Whitney, White Denim, Rogue Wave, Twin Wave, Little Scream) and dance jams/remixes to close out the daylight hours (Kaytranada, RAC, Justin Jay). NITE has a slew of danceable rhythms for the

This month’s mixtape has plenty of summertime sounds to go around. Leeds-based act Krrum once again kicks off the mix with upbeat rhythms of “Hard On You” before Glass Animals pull off an excellent feat of sounding like Yeasayer mixed with sounds of Timbaland’s past on “Life Itself”. Other sunshine ready tunes include SACHI’s swirling anthem “Hold On”, Gryffin & Manila Killa’s take on Jack Garratt’s “Surprise Yourself” and COIN’s indie pop pleasure “Talk Too Much”. Elsewhere, Beyonce and Kendrick make a perfect pair on uplifting cut “Freedom”, Father John Misty offers a catchy B-side

Just when I thought I was about to catch up on all the great new music of 2016, the tidal wave of surprise new releases happened: Beyonce. Drake. James Blake. Radiohead. Those big name acts are all huge releases that deserve their own listening sessions, but for now, let’s focus on other tracks you should not have missed so far this year. The first section of my latest mix has a number of dance delights from the likes of buzzing producer Mura Masa, rising duo Sofi Tukker and French producers Cassius. The latter somehow managed

Well folks, it is official: I have completed all of my graduate school class work. I still have a pesky thesis to tackle in the near future, but not going to classes is a big victory in my book. I have a thousand people to thank, but my wife gets the biggest credit for making our family survive the last 3 crazy years. Patience is a virtue and she had an endless amount of it to keep our lives going. On the musical side, Bonobo, Pretty Lights, Explosions in the Sky, ODESZA and a few

Whilk and Misky – Rain Dance & I Want Your Lovin’

London duo Whilk and Misky (aka Charlie and Nima) were constant plays last year with addictive rhythms like “Burn With Me” and “Babe I’m Yours” off their The First Sip EP. W&M manage to balance a concoction of folk, electronic and tribal influences that is more than appetizing. After a short, self-described “winter” coming to an end, W&M have dropped two new tracks that fit perfectly into their growing catalog. Recent release “Rain Dance” hums and builds with a haunting sample, light percussion and subtle guitar work before erupting with engaging vocals. First single &#

Back in action with a very, very delayed mixtape that rounds out a few late finds from 2015 and new joints from the past three months. Indie pop/folk tunes from The Lumineers, Moon Taxi and Modern Space kick off the set right before an upbeat section of electronic-inspired selections from the likes of Gryffin, AlunaGeorge and Matoma. The rest of the mix dabbles in indie rock (White Denim, Caveman), retro sounds (Lake Street Dive, Eli Paperboy Reed) and reflective cuts (Day Wave, Lola Marsh, Radical Face). Brooklyn synthpoppers Chairlift claim my favorite track of the

REMIX: Janet Jackson – Alright (Kaytraflip)

At this point, I think producer Kaytranada and legend Janet Jackson need to craft an entire album together. My obsession with Kaytranda’s take on Ms. Jackson’s “If” is well known, but the Montreal-based beatsmith has also laced other Janet works like Busta’s “What’s It Gonna Be”. Now Kaytranada just released his “flip” of Rhythm Nation 1814 classic “Alright” into a bossa nova burner featuring a sample of Burnier E Cartier’s “Mirandolina”. Stream Kaytranada’s spirited take on Janet Jackson’s “Alright” below. BONUS: Mary J Blige – I Can Love You (Kaytraflip) kaytranada Tour Dates
