The Knocks ft Alex Winston: You Can’t Hurry Love cover

Another solid cover via The Knocks from their cover/remix EP, Same Old Songs. On their take on The Supremes’ “You Can’t Hurry Love” they let bubbling songstress Alex Winston handle vocal duties. This one is a much better example of what I expect from the Knocks. I’m pretty much a sucker for anything featuring the lovely Ms. Winston though.

New Mixtapes: JayeL Audio 2-14-11 Disc Two

William Mackinnon painting via You Can’t Fall Off A Mountain
Disc Two offers up new music from Holy Ghost!, Tennis, The Knux, bubbling buzz bands Vaccines, Yuck and Smith Westerns and the catchiest leak from Peter Bjorn John’s next effort. I’ll continue my Lissie and Alex Winston promotion and just say that you need to hear “Bully” and “Locomotive” ASAP. These ladies should keep the rest of the female vocalists on notice throughout the year. Its safe to say 2011 will probably be a huge year for Fleet Foxes. “Helplessness Blues” is already a contender for song of the year (according to my ears).

New Mixtapes: JayeL Audio 2-14-11 Disc One

Urban RiverBusy time equals less time for the plethora of new music being released already in 2011. Seems like this is an annual occurrence because I also had a double disc mix last Feb as well. Disc One has a choice Passion Pit remix of a Cold War Kids track, more great indie pop from the likes of Foster the People, Freelance Whales and Alex Winston and a Beach Boys cover by rising Detroit band Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr. The unlikely combo of Theophilus London and Sara Quin only continues the versatility and appeal of Mr. London. Most encouraging though is the work of Alex Ebert aka Edward Sharpe, whose solo track “A Million Years” makes me hopeful for the full album.

Alex Winston: Sister Wife, Locomotive & Choice Notes Video

Alex Winston just keeps getting better each time I hear her unique voice. The title track from her upcoming EP (out March 8th!) features a mish-mash of sounds intertwined with Ms. Winston’s polygamy narrative and her diverse range of vocal talents. As a fan of “Big Love” and based on the tone of Alex’s lyrics (“Hey there sister wife, get the hell out its my night”), I’m guessing she is more of a Nicki than a Margene.

Thursday Linkage: Lettercamp, Eminem, Jay-Z, Interpol, Kings and Alex Winston

A) If you’re in Ferndale on 9/18, you might as well head to the D.I.Y, Street Fair to celebrate the release of Lettercamp‘s album Racoon Panda (released on Five Three Dial Tone Records). While you’re there, you might as well purchase the 10″ vinyl, which comes with a remix album. The remix album features production from members of LCD Soundsystem, K-OS’s band, and many more. More details as I receive them.
B) I was initially jealous of anyone attending Eminem and Jay-Z’s two-night stand at Comerica Park because, well, its Eminem and Jay-Z in concert. Now I’m just incensed after hearing Drake, Young Jeezy, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent made cameos. You win Michigan.
C) My interest in NYC’s Interpol has fluctuated throughout the years, but I’m definitely liking their new track “Barricade”. YouTube Preview Image
D) I’m loving the new Kings of Leon song “Radioactive”. No surprise there.
E) It may have only been a month since I featured Alex Winston as part of Heavy Roc Music, but she’s back. Her latest track, “Medicine” is an upbeat, chant-worthy song that you’ll instantly be humming. I’m expecting big things from Alex to come.

Heavy Roc Music = Samuel + Alex Winston + The Knocks

Heavy Roc Music is one of the best stables of artists I’ve stumbled onto in awhile. Right now, they’ve got three of my favorite acts of the moment and obviously have an eye/ear for talent.

Samuel
New York-based singer/songwriter Samuel has garnered a following for his take on Drake’s “Find Your Love” and breezy summer track “I Heart NY”. He doesn’t have any affiliation with Roc-a-Fella (hes currently signed to Columbia) as far as I can tell, but Kanye did cosign Samuel on his blog recently. Nice eh?

Alex Winston
This opera-trained chanteuse/guitarist happens to be a Detroit native, so thats already a reason to listen (Her artist profile photo is pretty breathtaking as well). Alex Winston instantly caught my ear by her impeccable taste covers with Jack Penate’s “Pull My Heart Away”. On her EP, The Basement Covers EP, she also tackles Teddy Bears, Francis & the Lights, and Rolling Stones to near perfection. She played drums, guitar and piano on the EP and seems to have talent the Motor City will be proud of soon. Her latest track “Choice Notes” has a ’60s hazy pop feel that should only further her buzz.

The Knocks
I first noticed this electro/dance duo while trolling Hype Machine for new music and stumbled upon their banging “Sleepyhead” remix. While they are experts at remixing, B-Roc and J-Patt make fun, party-ready music in their own right. Their pop music with electronic and fun often reminds me of Chromeo or MSTRKRFT and usually is queued next to those artists on my playlists. Whether its the anthemic (and relatable) fun of “Blackout” or hypnotic nature of “Something I Can Dance To”, you won’t be disappointed.
