New Mixtape: JayeL Audio 1-27-12

Influence is largely the theme of the majority of mixtape number two for this week. Teen Daze kicks things off with an Earth, Wind & Fire sampling dance party. Speaking of influence, does the piano fueled opening of Miike Snow’s “Devil’s Work” remind anyone else of Van Halen’s “Right Now”? I swear I just flashbacked to middle school. Charming female songstresses Alex Winston and Oh Land cover The Black Keys and The National, respectively. Even Mayer Hawthorne and Electric Guest offer up soul and Motown related gems. Elsewhere, The National demo a new track that sounds, well, like The National. We welcome back The Shins, which sound like the old Shins, but aren’t really the old Shins. Lastly, I have to say, I’m really enjoying the blues rock inspired sound of Cold War Kids new demos. I’m certainly intrigued by the addition of a new lead guitarist in Modest Mouse’s Dann Gallucci.

COVER: Turf War – Bad Moon (CCR Cover)

I don’t know why I didn’t see this coming. Combining my current favorite Atlanta band and one of my favorite Southern rock classics, Turf War meets CCR. Turf War gives “Bad Moon” a little extra twang and Southern garage rock. Why not?

The post 2011 wrap-up/holiday catch up is always a tough one, but brings plentiful music from artists new and old. The return on Lettercamp is in full swing on electro pop anthem “Oh Well”, Florence and the Machine put together one of the best covers of 2011 (“Take Care”) and Tennis expands on their reverb pop sound with “Origins”. Electric Guest show off the reasons Danger Mouse is producing their debut, The Rubens continue their building buzz (“My Gun”) and Frankie Rose shines with retro pop. Lastly, who is excited for the long awaited comeback of Santigold?

COVER: Alex Winston – Everlasting Light (The Black Keys)

I vote that Ms. Winston should do an entire Black Keys cover project called “Sister Keys”. Anyone in opposition? This should tide us over until Alex Winston releases her official debut album King Con on March 5th.

Oh Hai There. Yes, its been awhile but hopefully those mixtapes have been keeping you entertained. Its not possible for me to post everything thats been released over the past few weeks, but here are a few things I enjoyed.

-”The crown meets the Throne” as Clifford jumps on the “Niggas In Paris” remix. Its safe to say the original track had the greatest effect on me of any hip-hop song this year.
Jay-Z & Kanye West – Niggas In Paris remix ft T.I. (via PMA)

NEW MIXTAPE: JayeL Audio 7-29-11

Boom Box tee designed by Alex Solis available at Threadless

Whoops. Sorry for the music overload, but a lot has happened since those 4th of July mixtapes. M83 decided to drop their glowing first single from Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, Calvin Harris figured he wanted to continue making people groove and Mumford & Sons and Bon Iver opted to take over the cover game with renditions of Bonnie Rait & The National cuts. The pace may be slightly more laid back than Tuesday’s mixtape, but no less stunning. Icelandic gypsy folk collective Of Monsters and Men make harmonious music together, while Toro y Moi and Ralphael Saadiq offer up midtempo jams of their own. My favorite track so far though is Luke Temple’s strumming ode to a lady he just can’t have “Ophelia”. Interesting name and even better song. If someone explains Iron & Wine’s “Monkeys Uptown” though, it may be the frontrunner.

New Mixtape: JayeL Audio 7-26-11

photo via Joakim Johnson and available for purchase at Threadless.

New music time. It may only be July, but this edition may have one of my favorite tracks of the year in Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know”. Go ahead and try to ignore the chemistry with Kimbra and the chorus that will somehow inch into your mind multiple times a day. Aside from that bombshell, Wilco, Mumford & Sons, The Drums and Real Estate show off wares from their next efforts. Tennis and She & Him showcase female driven throwback covers and Fair Ohs continue on their threat to own summer of 2011. Later, Heavy Roc artist Samuel gets his Postal Service on in honorable fashion and The Knux come up with a summer anthem with the help of Scott Mescudi. Last but not least, GA’s own Turf War comes up with their most potent offering yet in “Cheers To The Years.” Ask Laura, I haven’t stopped listening to it for two weeks.

New Mixtape: JayeL Audio 6-9-11

Atlanta Sunset in Sepia
photo via John Ruby

Oh hey there.
Plenty of established acts and lots of new artists on this edition. Reptar wins for best new band name though. You wouldn’t know it if you get hypnotized by the pulsing synth of “The Dauphin”, but Young Digerati gets sadistic about women flocking from his “valley” to Southern California. Oh Land more than aptly takes over for Lily Allen’s absence in indie-pop land. Chromeo and Ezra from Vampire Weekend emulate Hall & Oates in the best way possible on “I Could Be Wrong”. Friendly Fires (“Blue Cassette”), Foster the People (“Call It What You Want”), and Strange Talk (“Eskimo Boy”) hold things down on the indie/electro dance front. Digitalism returns with “2 Hearts” and Beastie Boys get together with my girl Santigold. Lastly, Outasight’s Figure 8 EP is chock full of hits, but I’m loving “Life or Something Like It” most right now.

Happy Summertime….
Oh and wish Laura HAPPY BIRTHDAY while you’re at it.
