STREAM: Yeasayer – Henrietta

If there is anything that can get me to pause Hangout related posts (look out for a Dispatch interview soon!), its definitely a new Yeasayer joint. “Henrietta” is an eerie synth track that shows these Brooklyn lads are ready to experiment even more on their next album. Thanks CoS.

Stream: Wildlife Control – People Change & Analog or Digital

Brothers Neil and Sumul Shah make up Wildlife Control and recently sent me these gems. “People Change” and “Analog or Digital” should get you ready for the weekend with driving guitar and hooks that will surely be stuck in my head for the remainder of the day. Stream: RAC – Hollywood ft Penguin Prison

They’ve remixed everyone from Bloc Party to Kings of Leon and have been the most consistent collective in music today. Plenty of remix auteurs have transitioned from re-imagining other acts’ works to producing their own, but I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited for RAC to do it.

Needless to say, I haven’t stopped listening to “Hollywood” since it hit my inbox (Thanks Andre). “Hollywood” has a laid back, indie pop vibe that details a relationship gone sour and is expertly paired with vocals by Penguin Prison‘s Chris Glover. With summertime guitar riffs reminiscent of Empire of the Sun’s “Walking On A Dream”, I don’t think RAC’s first foray into original work could have dropped at a better time. Album Review: Santigold – Master of My Make Believe

I’m fairly certain Santi White‘s sophomore album will be near the top of my favorite albums of 2012 list. Master of My Make Believe takes the highlights of Santogold and strengthens them on all fronts. Summer album for sure.

FREE ALBUM: Johnny Headband – Who Cooks For You?

If free releases like “Over There” and “And Then Again” weren’t enough reason to support Johnny Headband, the buzzing band just released their debut, Who Cooks For You for free download. The styles of Who Cooks For You are appealing to fans of many genres ranging from indie rock (“Pineapple Triangle”) to Beck/LCD-inspired new wave (“And Then Again”,”Hot Button Topic”) and psych pop (“Water Damage”, “Argentina”). As Shawn Carter once said, “Its just good music”.

The Neighbourhood – Female Robbery

Mystery isn’t exactly a new thing in music, but it certainly worked well for The Weeknd. While The Neighbourhood won’t ever be confused with Abel Tesfaye, they did have the blog world on lock this past month with a mix of ambiguity and an interesting sound. Previously featured cut “Sweater Weather” charmed with blue-eyed soul vocals, a striking hook and subtle hip-hop tendencies. “Female Robbery” is a tad more haunting with a shouting sample, paced drum, reverb and what sounds like paranoia of a criminal. Listen below and look for their EP, I’m Sorry on May 7th.

Reptar: Orifice Origami

Like I said in the previous mixtape post, Athens, GA-based Reptar is one of my bands to watch this year (Alabama Shakes pretty much has 2012 on lock though…). Plus, I love that each time I Wikipedia “Reptar”, I get a childhood flashback.

The four-piece set a great precedent with their EP Oblangle Fizz Y’all (stream here) and debut album Body Faucet will be released on May 1st via Vagrant Records. With production by Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley, Washed Out), how can you lose? The latest single “Orifice Origami” features sunny synth and Graham Ulicny’s passioned vocals and could easily play on your next summer playlist.

Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr – We Almost Lost Detroit

One of my favorite tracks from one of my favorite albums of 2011 finally gets its own video. The Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr track is actually a Gil Scott Heron cover, but certainly resonates with what my homestate has went through over the past decade or so. Here is what the Detroit duo said about the video:

“We Almost Lost Detroit” began for us as an homage to one of the great artists of our time, Gil Scott Heron. We were so affected by its continued relevance as a piece of work some 30+ years later that just simply attempting to reinterpret it as a creative exercise seemed like a good enough idea on its own. While the song was originally penned as a reaction to a partial meltdown of a nuclear reactor halfway between Detroit,MI and Toledo,OH, so much of the imagery contained in Gil’s words seemed to ring true with the news of today.

But the spirit of the song that always rang out to us was that it didn’t seem to be about simply pointing out what had gone wrong. The message seemingly was one of progress. About setting things right. Coming together as people and moving forward. As Gil would say many years later in concert, the song is about realizing that “somebody’s always got to be on the job… because there’s always a job out there to do”.

So we wanted this video to be about people DOING things in and around the city of Detroit. People who are on the job. People who have moved past “what happened?” and are spending more time saying “lets MAKE things happen”. These are the people who we feel represent the city of Detroit.
