Influence is largely the theme of the majority of mixtape number two for this week. Teen Daze kicks things off with an Earth, Wind & Fire sampling dance party. Speaking of influence, does the piano fueled opening of Miike Snow’s “Devil’s Work” remind anyone else of Van Halen’s “Right Now”? I swear I just flashbacked to middle school. Charming female songstresses Alex Winston and Oh Land cover The Black Keys and The National, respectively. Even Mayer Hawthorne and Electric Guest offer up soul and Motown related gems. Elsewhere, The National demo a new track that sounds, well, like The National. We welcome back The Shins, which sound like the old Shins, but aren’t really the old Shins. Lastly, I have to say, I’m really enjoying the blues rock inspired sound of Cold War Kids new demos. I’m certainly intrigued by the addition of a new lead guitarist in Modest Mouse’s Dann Gallucci.

Hopefully that NPR scandal doesn’t affect their recent streak of providing free previews of solid new music. Totally agree with Mr. Hilton, Broken Bells was one of the great acts of last year and their album actually has surpassed many of my other favorites from 2010 in terms of re-playability. Turns out Mr. Shins and Mr. Mouse had a few good tracks that didn’t quite mesh with the rest of the album and will be on an EP titled Meyrin Fields.

Hopefully, this isn’t music overload for you, but I had to split this mixtape in two again…only a week later than I planned. I could give you a list of excuses of my tardiness, but you’d probably just rather get to the music, right?

My first mixtape of the new year features some of the usual suspects like Kid Cudi on a “Umbrella”-sampling Dan Black remix (“Symphonies”), Basia Bulat with her trademark belting (“Go.On.”) and my current favorite Vampire Weekend track (“Holiday”). Though I could have picked any of their catchy tracks off their recent number 1 album, Contra. Elsewhere, Rogue Wave makes their previously mentioned return with synth flare, The Shins’ James Mercer adds to DangerMouse’s diverse collaborators list as Broken Bells and Fun. slows things down a bit for some pop storytelling. I’ve pretty much been addicted to Telephoned‘s interpretation of The Dream’s “Rockin’ That Thang” and The Sound of Arrow’s remix to Alphabeat’s “Hole In My Heart”. Also, I’m pretty sure U.S.E. should have been making music in the ’70′s because I don’t know what to call their music other than Disco.
