Kyle Lucas: Its Always Sunny In Marietta Mixtape

Photobucket
Its long overdue, but its finally here. Some of these tracks have shown up on this site throughout the year (“Control”, “Purple Ribbon Rep”, “Queen of Apologies”) but most are brand new. They also have Big Boi’s signature of approval. Based on recent previews via uStream sessions, I can attest that “So High”, “Speak To Me” and “Neck Tie” are ridiculously dope. And those are the just track names that look familiar.

Enjoy and let me know what you think. I’ll give some more feedback once I’ve had a proper listen.

2009 Wrap-Up: The Year in Concerts

One last list…and here we go. I saw a few shows in 2009, not as many as the previous year, but don’t think I wasn’t tempted. I still say Detroit has better overall venues, but Atlanta draws better names (1st Quarter of 2010 looks ridiculous too). Below are 4 shows I saw worth writing about (I’m sure he could be great, but I’m not going to relive the Dan Deacon “experience” here). Notice, I didn’t attend one Girl Talk show or a festival in 2009. I certainly hope that will change this year.

4. Asher Roth/Kid Cudi – Tabernacle – August 2, 2009
I don’t know what fans who came to see Asher Roth thought, but as a Kid Cudi fan, I couldn’t have been happier. Walking into the Tabernacle to the sounds of “Down n Out” was a perfect way to start the festivities (its helps that is samples OutKast’s “Chonkyfire”). Flanked by bright digital screens, Cudi was lifted on the short, but sweet “Sky High”. “Day n Nite” was damn near classic with the original and later the dance-ready Crookers remix. Six months later, it blows my mind that he had such a good performance without using any of his best album tracks from Man On The Moon: The End of Day or “Memories”. How was he that good with a couple singles and mixtape cuts?? My favorite quote of any concert I’ve been to also happened that night. Courtesy of Laura: “Do rappers normally smile this much?” I imagine he’ll be smiling more next time.
As for Asher Roth, meh. I have high hopes for his next album, but I’ll skip the show.

3. Vonnegutt – The Loft – November 6, 2009

I’ve seen Vonnegutt three times in 2009 and I’m pretty sure they just get better each time. This time they opened for Heavy Mojo and I’m pretty sure Kyle and co. stole the show. The numerous hits from the Vice Nine EP sounded even better with tighter practice time. The previews of new tracks from Falling Up The Stairs (especially “The Ode To Whats Left of Hope”) gave encouraging signs for their debut album. And lets not forget the arsenal of covers (“The Seed 2.0″, “Heartless”) that they seemed destined to do. “Bright Eyes” continues to get fans as hyped as can be and should be at a venue near you in 2010.

2. Black Kids – The Loft – May 1, 2009
I’ve seen more shows at The Loft in Atlanta, GA than any other venue in the city. At this point, its my favorite too. Reggie Youngblood and crew had the sell out crowd eating up every indie-pop chorus the band sang. Kevin Snow’s drums had the place pulsing with the perfect opener, “Listen To Your Body Tonight”. On the keys/organs the ladies of Black Kids, Ali Watley and Ali Youngblood were equally engrossing on “Love Me Already” and “I’m Not Gonna Teach…”. Reggie was a sight to see though. Arms flailing, floppy afro and pouring all his emotion into “Hurricane Jane” was emphatic way to close the show.

1. Neko Case – Variety Playhouse – April 2, 2009

I expressed my admiration for the talents of Ms. Case many times over that past few years and wrote a lengthy post about this concert in particular. I’m still amazed at what a great performance I witnessed. Neko Case is a veteran performer, so it shouldn’t have been a surprised how attentive her fans were. There were epic story-telling (“Margaret vs Pauline”, “Hold On, Hold On”), vibrantly swaying vocals (“Red Tide”, “Middle Cyclone”) and spirited band work throughout (“That Teenage Feeling”, “This Tornado Loves You”). I was basically in a trance for the entire set.

Kyle Lucas/Vonnegutt: Queen of Apologies & Love In My Mouth cover

Its about time for another Kyle Lucas/Vonnegutt update.

Shake just let loose a slick Kyle Lucas track from HiPNOTT Records 2010 Takeover Vol 1 mixtape. Here Simon Illa adds in Kyle’s lyrics about an “emo lady” he just can’t quit over Patrick Stump’s beat (a remix of The Sounds’ “Queen of Apologies”). Been on repeat all of this wonderful snow day.

Kyle Lucas – Queen of Apologies remix (prod. Simon Illa)

The Vonnegutt show at East Andrews at the end of January got cancelled, but I heard the guys may be opening for one of DC’s finest soon. More details to come on that. Until then, enjoy this crazy cover of Kilo Ali’s “Love In Ya Mouth” the band did at Smith’s Olde Bar. I’m still kicking myself for not being able to see these guys open for B.o.B. aka Bobby Ray.

Side note: I can’t say how many times I’ve heard this song at the bar since I moved to Atlanta, but I had never heard it in Michigan.

There are plenty of bars in this one from both parties, but “I’m the outcast offspring of OutKast and Offspring” is a pretty great line.

Vonnegutt/Kyle Lucas: “Purple Ribbon” Reppin’

kyle lucas1
Vonnegutt MC/rapper Kyle Lucas has been keeping busy lately hitting a few tour stops with the band up the East Coast and at the A3C Hip Hop Festival here in Atlanta. Check on this quick interview where Kyle Lucas talks to Adam Gold about Vonnegutt‘s tour, the new album, his EP with Captain Midnite (cop it already), etc.

Aside from working on Vonnegutt’s debut album, Falling Up The Stairs, Kyle has been working on his next mixtape, Its Always Sunny In Marietta. If the track below is whats to come, it should be just as good as Kyle Lucas Is Still My Favorite. Listen as Kyle goes in over his boss Big Boi’s jam, “Royal Flush”. How sweet would it be to say Big Boi is my boss?

Vonnegutt is prepping for a larger-scale tour soon. Until then, check them out at The Loft in Atlanta with Heavy Mojo and Hollyweerd on 11/6 (buy $15 tickets here).

Showstopper '09: 8/7/09 – Vonnegutt – The Masquerade

vonnegutt show1
My own personal music fest continued Friday, when Laura and I headed to the Masquerade for Round 2 of Kyle Lucas and Vonnegutt. There was some confusion as to when the band’s set would take place, but it gave me a chance to check out The Status.

After a great set by The Status, Vonnegutt revved up a decent size “Hell” crowd of friends and loyalists. The festivities started with first single “Here We Go Again” and burned through the Vice Nine EP. Vonnegutt got great responses (and sing-a-longs) from updated editions of cuts like “Bright Eyes” and new track penned by Neil. This was the first show that I saw Taylor on the drums and he played about as hard as you can. The chemistry was pretty obvious with Patrick, Neil and Kyle. Energy reached a fever pitch when Kyle asked the crowd to show their hearts as the band launched into the ever-improving cover of Kanye West’s “Heartless”. All in all, a great night at the Masquerade for only $8. Not too shabby.

I suppose Big Boi is waiting on his solo to drop, but its really about time Vonnegutt’s debut was released. Or at the very least, the band should be getting more promo. I mean, the band seems to be doing everything they can from free interviews, free downloads, ASCAP Showcases and they are available on every social networking tool there is. Obviously, I’m no label head or manager, but it just seems like there should be more buzz around these guys. After seeing Asher Roth’s performance last week, if he can gain fame by running around and shouting into a mic off 1 single, these guys could definitely show him a thing or two about rocking a show.

Vonnegutt – 8/7/09 – The Masquerade
1. Here We Go Again (Repeat Offender)
2. Ex-Girlfriends Are
3. Moving On
4. Shaky Love
5. On My Side
6. Bright Eyes
7. Ode To What’s Left of Hope (new!)
8. Heartless (Kanye West cover)
9. Final Fantasy

Be sure to check out Vonnegutt at these upcoming shows:

9/24 – Arlene’s Grocery – New York, NY

New Mixtape: Nark Moon

new-moon-poster1
On this episode, Atlanta (my new locale) is heavily represented courtesy of Shawty Lo, Ludacris, Young Jeezy, Kyle Lucas and Grand Hustle Entertainment. Killer Mike, Young Dro and Clifford Harris himself heat up the summer with new tracks. Kyle Lucas shows how collaboration can be a very good thing on two tracks with the help of Captain Midnite and PH (formerly Pumpkinhead). And for the record, Kyle can be added to my list of rappers who actually sound good with Auto-Tune.

Finally, its been awhile since Mr. Shawn Carter made an appearance on a Nark, but “D.O.A.” and “Run This Town” should further build anticipation for The Blueprint 3. The former is a grimy street single aimed at Auto-Tune rappers in hopes of “bringing hip-hop back” (A tired phrase, but works here). While “Run This Town” manages pop single status with a Rihanna guest spot and some choice bars from Jay and Mr. West.

Vonnegutt: Updates & Shows

vonnegutt poker
Its been a minute since I posted anything about up and coming ATL-based band, Vonnegutt. They’ve certainly been busy though in preparation for their soon to be completed album on Big Boi’s Purple Ribbon label.

First off, emcee of the group, Kyle Lucas flew to Seattle to work with rising producer, Captain Midnite to work on some new music. A quick few days of recording sessions turned out the solid EP, I Brought Dead Flowers To A Funeral. Be sure to pick it up here.

Next up, singer Neil Garrard has been in the lab with Big Boi working on Mr. Antwon Patton’s solo, Sir Luscious Leftfoot: Son of Chico Dusty. Vonnegutt TV released a sneak peek of the duo performing a new track at Big Boi’s recent show at the W. Sounds like another hit. This album should be out already….
