England’s Jamie Lidell isn’t satisfied with staying in one creative lane. Previously an electronic act, Lidell made noise in my eardrums during 2008 with Jim. The album was an excellent exposition in blue-eyed soul with inescapable cuts like “Another Day” and “All I Wanna Do”. Compass was rooted more in funk and had help from heavyweights like Beck and Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor.
I can’t begin to predict what album #5, Jamie Lidell, is going to sound like, but I’m intrigued by recent release “why_ya_why”. Part p-funk, swampy Southern blues, jazz and electronica, Lidell croons away in a sea of sinister piano, vocal distortion, kazoo (?) and synth. If OutKast decided to reunite for real, they might want to consider hopping on “why_ya_why” because it sounds a lot like a grand Organized Noize production.
Look for Jamie Lidell on Feb. 19th (pre-order).
