2013 music festival season just got a lot more exciting with new additions to the Metro Detroit scene. See below for updates and details on gatherings of good music in and around the D this Summer. Which will you attend?
Orion Music + More, Belle Isle, June 8th & 9th (tickets)
I haven’t had much time to talk about Metallica’s ear melting festival since the initial announcement, but organizers have fortified a hell of a weekend. The line-up isn’t exactly my style, but fans of hard rock, metal and dance music should have a great time with acts like The Joy Formidable, Dropkick Murphy’s, Rise Against, Silversun Pickups, Bassnectar, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Deftones and of course, Metallica. Check out the schedule and start planning your weekend! Single day tickets are also available for a bargain, $90.
Movement Electronic Music Festival, Hart Plaza, May 25th-27 aka Memorial Day weekend (tickets)
The legendary electronic music fest just released the daily schedule and I’m excited to make my first visit to the fest formerly known as DEMF. Another genre that I’m not an expert in, but I’m looking forward to Gramatik, GRiZ and Big Gigantic closing out the fest on Monday night.
Mo Pop Fest, Sterling Heights, Freedom Hill Amphitheatre, August 17th (tickets)
One of two out of left field fests announced this week was Mo Pop Fest. Just 30 minutes outside of Detroit, organizers gathered a who’s who in indie pop for the 1 day event at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights. Highlights include Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Old Crowe Medicine Show, Manchester Orchestra, Wild Belle, Walk Off The Earth, Capital Cities, The Mowgli’s, Detroit’s Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr, Jamaican Queens and The Soil and the Sun. Expect a biergarten, art village and food truck park to keep you busy when not at the festival stages. The tickets (pre-sale starts May 7th) are also quite affordable with a presale price of $40 for GA (plus fees/taxes) and $100 for VIP. See you there!
Oakaloosa, Detroit, Fort Wayne, July 27th (tickets)
The other surprise announcement of the week was from Oaklaoosa, a music festival at historic Fort Wayne. Aside from the intriguing location, the 1 day event features an interesting line-up featuring national and local electronic, hip-hop, country and rock acts. The line-up includes the always fun Girl Talk, Bone Thugs n Harmony, Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas, Trick Trick, Robert James, Royce Da 5’9″, Kaleido, Ro Spit, Paulina Jayne, Freddy Todd, DJ AMF and Hir-O (More artists are expected to be announced soon). Tickets are a steal at $35 for GA and $55 for VIP, plus a percentage goes towards preservation of the historic landmark. I can’t attend, but let me know how it all goes down.
Lots of good options, plus St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival at Meadowbrook will announce the line-up on May 13th for the Sept. 14th event. Which Metro Detroit fest will you be at?
