My number one new artist obsession for the month of July has been Joy Kills Sorrow. The Boston-based quintet falls right in line with the wave of banjo/mandolin pop I’ve been enamored with (see The Lone Bellow, Swear and Shake, Punch Brothers, etc.). However, lead singer Emma Beaton brings a freshly enchanting voice to the mix of melodic folk and bluegrass. “Was It You” initially blew me away thanks to NPR, but the entirety of new EP Wide Awake is a soon-to-be hit parade. The spirited cover Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights” might be the top cover of 2013 contender too. You can stream the entire EP, but just buy it on Bandcamp…now.
