Just like they did in August’s edition, the ladies ran the music show over the past month. Lorde further exuded her dominance with the release of Pure Heroine, while the front women of Best Coast and Cults offered up particularly strong singles. Just to show how amazing their debut album is, HAIM decided that unreleased cut “Edge” should just be a bonus track. Is that what the kids call a “humble brag”? Let’s not forget about the fellas though. Chromeo and Cut Copy returned with great reasons to hit the dancefloor, while Detroit’s Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. hope to continue the success from their debut album and recent EP. Newcomers St. Paul and the Broken Bones show why they might be this year’s Alabama Shakes and The Magician proves the switch from mixtape machine to producer is no parlor trick. My favorite of the month comes from rising indie pop outfit Holychild on “Happy With Me”. If a quality stereo is at your disposal, be sure to crank up the volume and see if your neighbors complain. Indie pop doesn’t usually have such thumping bass and drum.
