’90s-era R&B is certainly “in” right now and I’m not mad at that. Echoes of Aaliyah, Ginuwine, Jodeci and other nostalgic acts are heard in current music like the xx, The Weeknd and Banks. I’m not sure any of them have fully committed to the throwback sound like LIZ though. The recent signee to Mad Decent (Diplo’s imprint) has been dropping tracks here and there, but recently let loose her entire 7-track EP, Just Like You. Tracks like “Say U Would” and “Don’t Say” sound like nostalgic slow burners Brandy might have released, while “Y2K”, “Stop Me Cold” and “Do I Like U” would line up nicely next to bouncy anthems like Ghost Town DJs’ “My Boo”.
