When it came out in 2001, ‘N SYNC’s ginormous hit “Girlfriend” added a touch of R&B (courtesy of Pharrell & Chad Hugo) to the boy band’s brand of sugary pop. It was also a launching pad for Justin Timberlake’s solo career, so it was perfect for rising singer/producer Hoodlem to craft a cover that touches the ‘N SYNC hit and JT’s “Senorita”. Interestingly, Hoodlem’s shadowy vocals combined light percussion and synth sound more like a Timbaland & Missy produced Aaliyah cut than a true ‘N Sync ode (a good thing). Stream Hoodlem’s take on “Girlfriend” below.
