The other lists for fun, but I have to say my favorite countdown/picks come from friends and readers. Last year’s Reader’s Edition of the 2013 Wrap-Up was so much fun, I had to bring it back one more time. So much fun that I had enough feedback for a two part edition. Take a gander at some of the community’s favorite albums, tracks and more from 2014. For the record, the photo above comes from my favorite live performance of 2014: St. Vincent at The Majestic Theatre in Detroit.
Special thanks to Scott G., Laura, Jenny and Katie M.!!
Scott G.: By far, Jack Garratt – Worry. This song encapsulates lyrics that allow the human spirit to be vulnerable. The vocal tone is gentle and at the same time sung from a wounded soul. The bridge is spiritual. The chorus uses smart syncopation. Bass is used at all of the right times. It is heavily track-layered, but never once stuffy. Each track has a purpose. The song is smart and soulful.
Katie M.: Top 6 Songs of 2014
Blood Orange – Chosen
Flying Lotus ft. Kendrick Lamar – Never Catch Me
Sylvan Esso – Hey Mami
Bombay Bicycle Club – Home by Now
Clean Bandit- Rather Be
Taylor Swift – Blank Space (you know it’s good)
Laura L.: Hozier – Can I just sum it up with “swoon”
Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack – Reminds me why I like music. Perfect for everything besides a pre-party mix.
Lake Street Dive – Girl’s got a solid set of pipes.
JayeL Audio mixtapes – ALL OF THEM!! I do have a feeling I was obsessed with Yes Please 83 (the June 19th mix)
“Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars – If you don’t love this song, we are no longer and will never be friends again.
“Water Fountain” by Tune-Yards
“Money on my mind ” by Misterwives
“Pressure” by My Brightest Diamond
Tove Stryke – “Even If I’m Loud It Doesn’t Mean I’m Talking To You” RAC mix
I have to stop because it’s not fair to all of the other 100s of mixtape songs that I was obsessed with or found myself singing over and over again.
Jen T. – Neko Case’s “This Tornado Loves You” has been sittin’ pretty as my most played song for 6 years. In one year, St. Paul and the Broken Bones has dethroned Neko as the most played song ever. I am a little sad about this. Neko and I have a deep bond, but St. Paul has my heart right now.
