2015 Wrap-Up: Top 60 Tracks of 2015 Mixtape

Top Tracks album cover2015 was phenomenal for many reasons in my life, from a new career and family milestones, to exciting travels (including a new festival) and plenty more to celebrate. Unfortunately, it did not allow much time for daily posts on all of the new music I managed to squeeze in. Though I did not get a chance to outline the reasons for my love of each of these 60 tracks in typical fashion, all of these songs were constant replays and/or impactful throughout 2015.

…that doesn’t mean I can stop myself from writing a few quick notes. Obviously, Kendrick Lamar, Sufjan Stevens, Father John Misty and Jamie xx were hugely influential on my ears (and will be reflected on my top albums list). Kendrick particularly impressed with a seminal hip-hop and jazz influenced album that balanced West Coast hip-hop jams (“King Kunta”) with jarring narratives (“The Blacker The Berry”) and poetic, political commentary (“Complexion”). Thundercat had the bass line of the year on “Them Changes”, Missy Elliott charmed her way back onto the scene with “WTF” and Alex Winston crafted an inescapable nostalgic pop anthem “that sounded even better live earlier this year”. This list has plenty of alt country twang with appearances by Shakey Graves, Jason Isbell, JD McPherson and more. Finally, the top 5 shifted based on the days, but Rationale’s “Fast Lane” charmed from the moment I first heard it. The mysterious lead singer/producer’s deep vocals offered an excellent contrast to the tropical production in the reflective tale.
