I’m counting down my top 20 remixes of the year, leading up to my top 70 remixes mixtape. Stream individual tracks below and the full mixtape here.
20. The Knocks-Love Me Like That ft Carly Rae Jepsen (55.5 VIP Mix)
Sometimes, it takes the artist closest to the original to make a quality remix. The Knocks managed to make their collaboration with Carly Rae Jepsen even more infectious.
19. Jai Wolf-Drive ft The Chain Gang of 1974 (RAC Mix)
RAC’s output of remixes did not grab my ears in 2016 like it did in the past. However, his take on Gwen Stefani’s “Make Me Like You” and Jai Wolf’s “Drive” were a welcome break from the influx of trap, house and tropical-flavored remixes that peppered many of my playlists.
18. CHVRCHES-Empty Threat (Big Wild Remix)
Many times, it is even more satisfying when a producer strips down a track completely and comes up with a newly transformed track of their own. That was the case with “Big Wild”, which sounds like a totally new production (in an energetic and danceable way).
17. Major Lazer-Cold Water ft Justin Bieber & M0 (Delirious & Alex K Remix)
Delirious & Alex K’s injection of tempo and a bit of chaos was exactly what I needed to pull me away from the original pop hit.
16. Henri Texier-Les La-Bas (Bonobo Remix)
The Bonobo remix of “Les La-Bas” was a Record Store Day surprise release that aligns quite well with the #1 remix on this list. The circulating tropical house rhythms should get anyone with a pulse on the dance floor.
15. Era Istrefi-Bonbon (Marshmello Remix)
Marshmello’s notoriety grew tremendously with constant touring and festival appearances based on his album debut, Joytime, early in 2016. His take on Era Istrefi’s “Bonbon” infused that same style and energy that would make for a great future festival dance party.
14. Rihanna – Kiss It Better (Kaytranada edition)
Rihanna’s label clearly appreciated the value of remixes in promoting Anti with a slew of remix packs, including everyone from R3HAB to Don Diablo. Kaytranada’s take on “Kiss It Better” was the best of the bunch though.
13. AlunaGeorge ft Popcaan-I’m in Control (The Magician Remix)
Though it was not my #1 remix of the year, The Magician’s rework of “I’m In Control” was probably my 2nd most played. AlunaGeorge’s addictive hook was expertly paired with The Magician’s bouncing backing.
12. Jamie xx-Seesaw ft Romy (Seesaw Remix)
Jamie xx was mostly quiet in 2016, but Seesaw’s hypnotic take kept he and Romy on my playlists all year long.
11. Justin Timberlake-Can’t Stop The Feeling (Loud Luxury Edit)
“Can’t Stop The Feeling” was played nearly everywhere from grocery stores to movie theaters with an inescapable hook and summery vibe. However, Loud Luxury truly bested the original with more tempo, stuttering vocals, and a much more danceable production.
