My favorite mixtapes of the year have arrived: 4th of July mixtapes. Three sets ready for the holiday weekend, DAY (indie), DAY (dance edition), and NITE (dance and house music).
The more traditional DAY mix hovers between indie rock, folk, reggae, pop, and alt country. There are a slew of sun-ready current and future hits from JayeL Audio stalwarts like Local Natives, Vampire Weekend, The Black Keys, Sure Sure, and Frankie Cosmos. Current favorite: Folk stomper “Don’t Wanna Be Without Ya” by Penny and Sparrow.
I cooked up a “dance edition” of the DAY mix for the second year due the demand after 2018’s inaugural mix. The mixtape still features plenty of breezy dance pop, a bit of disco, world jams, funk rhythms, and house music. However, I front loaded the beginning of the mix with hazy electronic tracks perfect for any chill activities you may encounter on the beach. Current favorite: a tie between ROSALÍA’s blistering dance anthem “Aute Cuture” and Haywyre’s “Contagious”.
Last, but not least, NITE features a full slate of house and disco efforts from acts like Goldroom, A-Trak, Oliver Heldens, Hannah Somebody, and Purple Disco Machine. Big thanks to The Magician and the Knocks who influenced selections from recent Magic Tapes and the Knocks’ Memorial Day mix. Current favorite (s): Mercer’s addictive remix of The Magician’s “Ready to Love” and Disclosure’s VIP remix of Khalid’s “Talk”. So nice The Magician mixed them perfectly on Magic Tape 89.
