Perhaps I caught the vibe of my 4th of July 2019 DAY mixes a bit too hard. It appears that those chill sounds soundtracked the rest of my summer as well. This end of the summer mixtape hits similar notes with hazy, laid back melodies that pair very well with a cloudy IPA, hard seltzer, margarita, or other beverage of choice near a sunset and/or body of water.
I don’t mind saying that tracks 15-24 might be one of my favorite mixtape stretches of all time with folk, rock, and indie tunes that sounds like summer nights (at least to me). Caamp’s melodic rhythms on “Peach Fuzz”, Penny & Sparrow’s campfire thumper “Eloise”, and Adam Melchor’s melancholy “Joyride” could easy soundtrack the waning hours of beachtime and dockside delights. Acts like Moon Hooch and DJ Yoda even return for more fun with spirited, but equally catchy gems on “Give Yourself To Love” and “Rising Brook”, respectively. Though not every sound on the mix is chill, recent gems from Hot Chip, The Raconteurs, and Friendly Fires round out
I also took a different approach on this mix and made my favorite song of the effort track #1. HAIM’s return on “Summer Girl” couldn’t be more perfect. An earworm skat-like hook, slinky bassline, and jazzy influence hover like a July sunset as Danielle Haim’s smoky vocals.
